A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN.
In early January 2008 I was asked to co-ordinate the committee and activities for the clubs Centenary year - 2010 a massive milestone in its history. I considered this an honour particularly as I believed there to be far more members more suitable and longstanding than myself to carry out the role . Nonetheless, with some trepidation I decided to take it on! Any activity arranged whether golf or social must be self financed. This in itself is a daunting task.
I now needed a committee, those with a history of involvement in club affairs, varying degrees of expertise and all round knowledge. And so, on February 14th 2008 we held our inaugural meeting. The President of the time John Howatson, The Captain of the time Bill Whittaker, Tony Jones, Val Ellison , Ken Jones and the Secretary/Manager. Since then we have been joined by the current Captain Ted Francis, Vice Captain Mike Pratt and Joyce Falkner representing the Ladies section. It would be remiss of me if didn't add that Val is now the Ladies Vice Captain. We are soon to be joined by the Vice President Ron Jones and the Ladies Vice President Dorothy Owen. Essential it is thought, because of their important positions during the year.
Tony will be preparing a visual presentation of the club's history, showing images of events and personalities from days gone by. This will also be displayed on this site. Some £500 had already been raised from raffles held at club functions so we were on our way. Since then funds have been raised through further raffles, donations and a very successful race night. Fund raising will continue with maybe, a second race night or a casino evening later on in the year but particularly, a 200 Club is being organised with many valuable prizes. Please look out for this soon. A Centenary Golf Week has been arranged for June and many other social events to mark the year will be arranged including a Centenary Ball hopefully, to help make the year one to remember.
